Acute Care
Acute care for illness and injury for visitors of the Outer Banks.

Examples: Sore throat, bronchitis, sunburn, UTI, sinusitis, ear infection, sprains, influenza, jellyfish sting, sports physical.

Examples: Heat stroke, non-cardiac chest pain, mild/moderate allergic reactions, headache, asthma, prescription-refill, high blood pressure, diabetes, stingray injuries, poison ivy.

Complicated/ New Illness/Prolonged visit
Examples: Fish hook removal, suturing, foreign body removal, pre/post hospital care, unstable vital signs, diabetes complications, heart failure, COPD, IV fluids, complex procedures Time > 30 minutes.
Testing will incur and additional charge to the visit fee:
Urinalysis ($20); Rapid Covid-19, rapid strep ($25); rapid flu A and B ($50), EKG ($75)

Longterm Care
Family medical care for residents and frequent visitors of the Outer Banks.

Complete medical history and physical examination. Medical conditions, depression, anxiety, social history.
Applies to any existing patient not seen for 3 years or more*

Simple Complexity
Examples: Med-refill, lab or imaging review, UTI, tennis elbow, sports physical.

Examples: More than one medical issue and or chronic conditions management.

Advanced Complexity
Examples: Annual Physical, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, complicated GI problems, thyroid conditions, type 1/Type 2 diabetes, oncology management in consultation with a cancer specialist, hypertension/high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia/high cholesterol, multiple medication reviews.
Testing will incur and additional charge to the visit fee:

Had to go see Dr. Blackwood for a bad laceration on my foot. Cut it on a nail on the deck of our vacation house coming off the beach. They close at 3. We arrived literally at 2:58. Was welcomed in. And treated immediately. Dr. Blackwood and his staff which happens to be his wife and daughter are amazing. Can’t say enough good things about him and his demeanor. Was stitched up and sent to the pharmacy for meds and a shot. All with a smile and left me his cell phone number if there are any problems. Thank you Doc!!

We were staying in Carova and my son had a corneal abrasion and the nearest eye doc was over an hour away. Dr. Blackwood and staff was more than accommodating to take care of my son and provided care. Dr. Blackwood’s nature of taking great/comfort care of my son was spectacular. We were prescribed an antibiotic eye cream and sent it to the pharmacy right away. Additionally, a few days later when we were already home from our vacation he took the time to call and check up on my son’s status. I can’t say anything more positive about this visit! I would not hesitate to use his services again in the future if needed (hopefully not!).

My 2.5 year old fell at the park and lacerated his head. We were so fortunate to find Lighthouse medical care right down the road. The doctor examined him right away and was so caring and compassionate. My son ended up needing staples and it was a very quick procedure. We are so thankful for the care we received today and the kindness of the doctor and receptionist.

Our 1 and a half year old was running a high temp and we were able to get her in for an appointment almost immediately. Dr. Blackwood was amazing and even went as far as giving us his personal number if we had any questions or concerns on the holiday weekend!

Dr. Blackwood
Dr. Blackwood received his medical degree from University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1982 and achieved Board Certification in Family Medicine in 1984. Over the past 30+ years, Dr. Blackwood has dedicated his life to his wife, Catherine, his 10 children, and medicine.
Dr. Blackwood began practicing in Virginia Beach more than 25 years ago. In addition to family medicine his expertise also draws from more than two decades as an emergency room physician and 20 years as a faculty member of the Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Known for his keen mind, extensive experience, and an uncommon breadth of medical skills, having worked in both rural and urban environments as a private medical practice physician, Dr. Blackwood:
